Create an ingredient

Tip  Click on the hyperlinks next to the arrows to expand each section or click the show all link at the top right of this page.

  1. Select the Ingredient Navigator tab.
  2. How?

  3. On the Action menu, point to New, and then click Ingredient.
  4. - or -

    Right-click on the navigator treeview and then, on the popup menu, point to New, and then click Ingredient.

    Select an ingredient in the Navigator treeview and click New on the task toolbar.

  5. Enter the ingredient properties.
    1. Type the name of the ingredient in the Name box.
    2. Type the ingredient's common name in the Common Name box.
    3. Click the Ingredient Folder ellipsis button to select an ingredient folder for the new ingredient.
    4. Click the Photograph ellipsis button to select a photograph for the ingredient.
    5. Type the ingredient comments in the Comments box.
    6. Note  Only the ingredient name and ingredient folder are mandatory. All other ingredient information is optional.

  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter the ingredient measures.
    1. Select the measures you would like to associate with the ingredient. For example, if your new ingredient is flour, you might want to select ounce, pound, tablespoon and cup.

      Note  If you select a volume measure, you will need to enter the mass (in grams) of the selected volume. This is often listed on food packages.

      Tip  If you are uncertain of the mass of a volume measure, you can click Estimate. This will let you choose an ingredient that you think has a similar density.

      Note  If you select a custom measure, you will need to enter the measure description (e.g. "1 can") and the mass (in grams) of the measure.

  8. Click Next.
  9. Enter the ingredient costs and grocery aisle.
    1. If you know the cost of any of the ingredient measures, click Add to add an ingredient measure cost row. Living Cookbook will automatically calculate the costs of the other measures.
    2. Select the preferred store from the Preferred Store list. The preferred store is the location where you most often purchase this ingredient.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Enter the ingredient nutrition.
    1. In the Serving Size box, enter the serving size for your nutrition information (this is normally listed at the top of the nutrition information on the product package).
    2. Select the serving measure from the list.
    3. Enter the nutrition information in the nutrient boxes.
    4. Tip  Vitamin and mineral nutrients can be entered as mass values (e.g. grams, mg, etc.) or as percent of recommended daily allowance (e.g. 7%).

  12. Click Next.
  13. Enter the ingredient notes.
    1. Click Add to add a new note.
    2. Tip  Click Move Up or Move Down to change the order of the notes.

  14. Click Next.
  15. Enter the ingredient source.
    1. Enter the ingredient source in the Source box.
    2. Enter the ingredient web page in the Web Page box.
  16. Click Finish.
